What a parent desire most is to watch their babies learn how to walk at an early age. Most probably at 9 to 12 months and by the time they hit 14 months, they can comfortably walk around. Children are different and they start walking at different ages. As a mother, you don’t have to sit and watch them struggle on their own.

You can help your baby learn how to walk. It is not only fun but it also feels good to be able to do something of such great importance for them. How can you help a baby learn how to walk ?

1- Spend Most Of Time On The Floor

You should give your baby a lot of ‘floor-time’. This means that most of their time is spent on the floor and not lying on the bed or sitting on the couch. It is not negligence as some naive people might try to put it, it is the effort! This allows them to take their time to learn about the environment around them and as all children are, they will desire to explore.

Children are the most curious of all human beings and within no time, they will be moving around. Do not be worried about them falling; it is the only way that they will learn.

2- Motivate Them

Babies need motivation just like us adults. Just like you need the motivation to wake up early and jog, they also need it to move from one step to another. They have to be motivated to take those baby steps.

You can place their favorite toy a few feet in front of them and they will have to move to it. You can even stand a few steps away from them holding their bottle of milk and they will start walking to you so that they can have it.

3- Let Them Be In Diapers

It is downright reckless to allow your baby to stay outside in a diaper but it does absolutely no harm when they are inside. When they have less bulky clothing, it allows their hips as well as their feet to move more freely.

When they have more clothing, it becomes cumbersome and moving from one point to another becomes too much work for them’. Human beings are unique even in the sense that they find getting tired most undesirable.

4- Encourage Them To Squat

Apparently squatting is not only recommended for women who want to shape up and men who are in love with physical fitness. It is also essential for babies. To encourage your baby to squat, you can place a toy or their favorite snack near their feet when they are standing with the support of your coffee table or your couch. They will have to squat to get it.

This will consequently help them to strengthen the hip muscles enabling them to increase the stability on their feet. Within a short period of time, they will be able to move about with more ease.

5- Using A Baby Push Walker

One of the best and most effective ways of teaching your baby how to walk is by the use of a baby push walker. During the early stages of a baby’s development, they need support to help them get up and move around. A baby push walker is exactly what they need.

It immeasurably helps them to develop a sense of coordination and it also enhances their motor skills. With time, as they continue to use this toy, they learn how to walk.

Besides, they will find it so much fun that they will want to have it all the time. Do not think about how much you will have to spend on the baby push walker or the chances of it getting destroyed, think about the miracles it can work.

6- Encourage Their Rotation

Another way that you can immensely help your baby to learn how to walk is to encourage them to rotate their bodies. For instance, when they are busy cruising at the couch, stand behind them and call them out. They will be encouraged to turn around towards your voice.

As they turn around, the may be tempted to let go of the couch hence lessening their support. This means that they will now stand on their own. Standing on their own is the first step towards walking.

It might scare you a little bit because the first time, they might fall. That first fall will make them do everything they have to do to avoid falling a second time. Sometimes, learning comes with a little pain.

7- Make Balancing A Game

You can make balancing a fun game that you play with your baby. Whenever she is able to balance on her own feet, complement and praise her. Pointless as it might seem, it works. The more they are able to balance on their own the stronger their limbs grow.

When their legs are stronger, they will stumble less as they move about and walking will not be as difficult for them.

8- Help Them To Cruise More Often

Most babies learn how to walk through cruising. Create some time and line up furniture for them to cruise. Ensure that it is lined up and there are no objects on their paths that might make them trip and fall. You can also deliberately place them near your furniture; they will stand and start cruising on their own.

At some point, encourage them to let go of the furniture and stand independently. That will be the beginning of their baby steps!

The most important years of your baby will always be their early years because it is at this particular age that his/her foundation is laid. It is important to be a part of it and do whatever you can to ensure that their growth is fast.

Why do you think that some children do not walk even when they are 20 months? Some may have health problems but for others, their parents do not take their time to help them learn how to walk.

  1. Thanks for sharing this helpful article!

For all parents, don’t forget to provide them with supportive shoes.. from own experience in this field I have found out that some parents buy shoes without measuring their baby’s feets. Some buy to smalll and some to big. A baby needs the right shoe size to get the right support to walk.

Lastly, please buy shoes that prevent blisters. Imagine what you feel when you buy the wrong pair of shoes.

    I hope this helps!!
